DAT technology may be used for backup and data transfer. The tape degenerates each time of use like video tapes do. For this reason, DAT may not be used like a slow hard disk.
Keep tape index files on your hard disk to longer the life of your tapes and your drive. Compressed index files are realy small and can be handled by dds2tar directly.
